My wife and I started camping over 40 years ago. One of the first times we went camping we were on the Canadian side of the Lake of the Woods. We had borrowed a canoe and were planning on going canoeing in the morning. However, over night the wind came up making it impractical to go canoeing on such a large lake so we didn’t get out of our camping tent and camping sleeping bags at the crack of dawn as we had planned. The problem was the wind wasn’t blowing hard enough to blow our cooler on the ground.
Investigating we found a big black bear eating our food about 10 feet from our camping tent. After thinking about it we decided that we were better off taking a chance on leaving the camping tent and going into our car rather than taking a risk that the bear would come and visit us inside the tent where we would be trapped.
The bear left us enough for breakfast and a grocery store wasn’t that far away so it was kind of funny. However, it wasn’t so funny when the bear came back that night and took steaks right off the fire that other campers were cooking. The park rangers said they would have to destroy the bear since it had done it before and they had already tried to trap it and take it elsewhere. It always found its way back.
There is a lesson to be learned from this. Secure your food somewhere that isn’t accessible to the local wildlife. Do that either by putting it in your vehicle or in a container that can be pulled high enough into a tree to make it difficult for the local wildlife to get at. Above all don’t take any food with you into your camping tent or camping sleeping bag. You don’t want any wildlife to smell it and come visiting. You would be trapped in the tent and the animal would be scared.
Why is all this important beyond not having to purchase new food? First of all there is your safety to consider. The bear I found wasn’t upset but the next one might be. Second of all by feeding the bear even unintentionally you foster dependence by the bear on human beings. Eventually, like this bear the animal will have to be destroyed before it creates a tragedy. It really wasn’t fair to the bear; it thought it had learned a new food gathering skill.
One of the great benefits of camping or other wilderness type activities is it teaches us basic skills that our ancestors took for granted. Knowing where to pitch your camping tent and where in the tent to roll out your camping sleeping bag might not seem like much when home in the city. Once you get wet it becomes more important.
It never fails to amaze me how otherwise very intelligent people will not use common sense when spending time outdoors. Things like driving your vehicle on too thin ice, to not wearing life jackets. I agree 99 times out of 100 you will get away with it, but when you don’t the price is rather large. I also feel that skills learned transfer to other areas of life as well. For example, learning to pay attention to details that shouldn’t matter but do helps in other areas that shouldn’t matter either.

What is the best way to recover when a towed camper trailer starts to “Fish tail” out of control behind me?
Towing my little capler behind my ranger yesterday, when i made a sudden movement in the steering wheel. The camper fishtailed and skidded back and forh fishtailng behind me. It was hard to get under control and “Wagged the dog” and kind of threw my pick-up truck around. Lucky I did not hit the guard rail or a passing car.
Don’t accelerate, slow down without braking until it’s corrected, unless you can apply trailer brakes, or you can end up with the same problem at a higher speed causing an accident.
Check your load distribution too, as not enough weight on the hitch and to much in the back will also cause swaying.
