Top Causes Of Accidents In Your Used Travel Trailer
Most people have experienced the suspended time feeling of being in an accident which is about to happen. Some statistics indicate that recreational vehicles are involved in fewer driving calamities than other vehicles, but it's also true that there are fewer Class C RVs on the road than the sum of all other vehicles. Albert Einstein said, "Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them." If you make the effort to prevent accidents in your used travel trailers, you may consider yourself a genius.
Preventing accidents due to mechanical failure
- Service your Class A motorhome regularly. Change your oil, check your transmission fluid, coolant, and brake fluid. Check the air filter, and make sure it is clean. Check for fluid leaks. Failing to regularly maintain your rig may, at the least, create a need to call for road service.
- Know how your brake and suspension systems work. Read your owner's manual carefully, and ask for help if you need advice. Remember the parking and towing brakes.
- Check all of your lights especially including turn signals, and brake lights.
- Inspect your tires. Overloaded or unbalanced Motorhomes Class A, and underinflated or old tires are disasters waiting to happen.
Preventing accidents by vigilance
- Always look at your LP gas connections and hoses before you leave. Keep some approved LP leak detector solution to check them. If you cannot stop the leak by tightening connections, see your RV technician.
- Make sure your awnings and steps are carefully stored so they do not break loose on the road.
- Keep a 3x5-note card where you can see it while driving with the height of your fifth wheel camper on it. When you are coming to an overpass, you'll have that all important number in front of you.
- Remember that a Class B motorhome left parked for a while is susceptible to rodent and insect damage. This can compromise your ability to drive your Class C RV as well. It will help if you do not park on gravel, or dirt. If you run your engine regularly, it will discourage pests from making themselves at home.
- Check all of your slideouts and your Leveling System to make sure they will not stick when you need them.
- If you are not experienced in driving the big rigs, you would do yourself and your family a service by taking a specialized class. An informed driver is a safer driver.
