What Every Buyer Should Know about Motorized Awning

Awnings are now considered a "necessity" because of its many uses. Are you thinking about purchasing one? Before you do, it is best if you know a lot about these things to make sure you get a good buy.

Motorized awnings can be purchased at home depots or online stores. Buying from a physical store allows you to personally inspect the item before buying however this may not always be for everyone because of time constraint. The most convenient option therefore is buying from online stores because you can choose from many designs and styles, plus you have the freedom to go from one store to another and compare prices in just a matter of minutes. You need to be cautious though and make sure you only get items from sellers who are known to provide high quality awnings.
Installation
You do not really need to hire professional services to install your motorized awning. As mentioned, this is fairly easy to operate. Initially, however you would need to secure a few tools such as bolts and washers in order to set up mounted brackets. You will most likely need help from someone to do this since you need to lift the awning and then after slide the mounting bar onto the set brackets. But if you find this too complicated and you do not really have the time to install it on your own, you can always hire some people to do it for you.

There should be some cotter pins holding the two rails/slides on either side that keeps it from rolling out. Two people are best to do this, one on each side, otherwise it'll go cross-ways on ya. Take the hook part of the rod & loop it on the strap & slowly roll it 'out' til you can grab the strap w/your hands. Roll it out to desired level & slide the cotter pins back in place to hold it from rolling out further. Word of caution, if it rains on ya, BE SURE to let the awning dry if possible before rolling it up so it stands less chance of mildewing. If it's still got water on it when ready to roll up, pull the awning all the way down to drain the water off & we used a broom (the bristle end) to 'sweep' on the underside (the part you sit under) the water off from the topside. If it's still moist it should be okay til you get to where you can roll it back out to finish drying.

Getting Your RV Ready for Winter

Well winter is fast approaching and your all done with your RV or trailer. Now before the winter comes, you have to winterize your RV. Hopefully you've done it already like myself because winter is already here. If you live in a warmer climate, maybe the winter hasn't hit you yet. So you will have alittle longer to do this or your still using your RV or trailer.

Where I live, right after the Thanksgiving long weekend, I get myself ready to winterize my trailer. First I take out all the food, clean it up, put things in their proper place and just basically tidey it up. I give the trailer a good washing on the outside, also don't forget the awning as well. I open it up, prop the support arms underneath the trailer so the awning top is flat to the side of the trailer. A good power wash will clean whatever has gathered on the top of the awning. I then clean the wheels with Armoral to protect the sidewalls and then cover them with wheel covers.

Now I'm ready to flush the all the tanks. I always do this every fall to make sure the tanks are in good condition for when I open the camper up for the new season. Now once everything is cleaned out, I drain all the lines inside but running all the taps so alittle as possible of water is not left inside the lines. Now I have already bought my RV anti-freeze so I'm ready to run it through all the lines. I usually use about 4 gallons of anti-freeze so I always have some onhand in the garage. I drain the hot water tank and make sure I have the by-pass value turned on. Some RV's have the by-pass kit already installed on the pump but I didn't so I had to installed my own.

Now that the hot water tank is drained, I re-place the plug, flip the by-pass valve on the hot water tank and now turn the by-pass valve on at the pump. Now I place the suction line on the pump, place it in a jug of anti-freeze and turn on the pump to prime the pump with it. Now I go to the farthest tap which is my bathroom and start 1 tap to get anti-freeze through it. Once you see the pink color, stop. Go to the next tap and repeat. Then do the bath tub and shower. Once you see the anti-freeze come out, stop as the line is full now. When the jug run's out, just replace with a full one. Now do the taps in the sinks as well. Also don't forget to do your toilet to! On my camper the lines are clear so I see that all the lines are full of anti-freeze underneath my sink.

Once all the lines and taps are full, I pour some anti-freeze down all the traps, in the black and grey tanks and the fresh water tank. I also go outside to the City Water connection, pull the mesh screen off and push on the little plug to get anti-freeze through that as well. Now my camper is winterized and good to go for the new season when I open it up and flush all the anti-freeze out!

Ten Top Tips For Your Caravan Holiday

Before you leave

1.Save for space - Collect all free sample sachets of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. These take up far less space than large bottles and are perfect to take on holiday, leaving you more room for other essentials.

2.Never forget – Make a laminated checklist of everything that you need to take with you. This allows you to mark off items with a whiteboard pen when you have packed them into your caravan. You can then rub off the pen when the list is complete and use the checklist again next year.

3.Pack safely – When loading up your caravan make sure you put all heavy items directly over the axle. Placing heavy items at the back of the caravan could cause your van to pitch back and forth. Also, be sure not to put any heavy items into cupboards – store them on the floor to maintain control of your caravan.

4.No flies on you – If you are sick of spending hours picking the squashed flies from your caravan's front window, then give this tip a go. Before you set off, cover your front window with cling film (attached with masking tape.) Then, when you arrive on site, simply peel off the cling film along with all the creepy crawlies you have picked up on the journey.

5.Give it some welly – Wellington boots are vital on any wet weather holiday. A good tip for keeping them dry and ready to use is to store them on two sticks stuck into the ground by the door to your van or awning. Cricket stumps work well for this, search through your children's junk in the shed to track some down.

6.Stamp out stubbing – To prevent people from stubbing their toes on exposed metal stakes, such as the ones used for awnings, purchase some cheap brightly coloured armbands. When inflated they fit snugly over the protruding stakes and provide a brightly coloured warning of danger and also a cushioned impact for anyone who still manages to trip over them.

7.Slip and slide – Ever sat down to your morning cereal and ended up with half of it in your lap because you're pitched on a slope? A cheap and easy way to solve this problem is to buy a roll of non-slip matting (you can find it in most caravan shops for just a few pounds) and cut it into small squares to put under plates, glasses and cups. Problem solved!

Leaving the site & your journey home

8.Stuck in the mud – If you are staying in a particularly muddy site and your caravan has sunk into the ground, try hitching up your car at a 45-degree angle to the van. This means that when you pull off the car will not be pulling the full weight of the van from the start – it will just be turning slightly so the car has more chance of getting a good initial grip.

9.Get hooked – If you ever need to reverse your car to couple on your own, try this clever tip. Before you start, place a pole, such as one from a windbreak, vertically against the tow hook and then put a piece of tape on your back window to indicate the central position of the tow ball. Now all you need do is look in your rear-view mirror while reversing and line up the pole and the tape.

10.Drive safe – An important tip for any journey - if you are carrying a heavy load in your caravan you should be aware that the time it takes to accelerate and stop will change and need to be adapted to. Watch your speed carefully and leave ample room between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.

Quick Guide to Retractable Awnings

Awning manufacturers have a shorthand jargon that succinctly describes their awnings’ characteristics, quality, function, even style. Knowledge is the key to having an efficient (and enjoyable) online shopping experience for retractable awnings. These simplified common terms can help you know in advance what you’re looking at, so you know how to find what you want.

Terms: Parts

A lateral arm retractable awning is an awning which can be rolled up and closed; unlike fixed awnings and canopies, a retractable awning has no support posts. A retractable awning has an intrinsically simple design:

· Frame – the skeleton of the awning; the frame is comprised of the mounting bar, arms, and roller tube.

· Mounting bar – the base of the retractable awning which is mounted in place; when the awning is retracted, the Awning Fabric rolls around the roller tube attached to the mounting bar.

· Arms – the part of the frame which folds closed at the elbow when the awning is retracted (rolls in) and opens when the awning is extended (rolls out).

· Shoulder – the joints on the retractable awning arms where arms attach to the mounting bar.

· Front bar – the extrusion at the very front of the awning frame.

· Hood – a cover which fits over the retractable awning frame and fabric; when the awning is fully retracted, the hood protects the exposed fabric, frame, and motor from the elements.

· Valance – a strip of fabric, usually a few inches high, which hangs from the front bar of the retractable awning.

· Rib – the cross bars of the frame which support the awning fabric. Not every awning style has ribs, since ribs are often used to create a shape to the awning frame; for example, lateral arm retractable awnings don’t have any ribs.

· Canopy – an elongated, dome, or waterfall style retractable awning

There are dozens of styles of retractable awnings, determined mainly by the frame shape:

· Lateral arm awning – the most common, and oldest, retractable awning style, consisting simply of two or more arms, the front bar, mounting bar and the fabric. This is the most popular style for homes and commercial buildings; this is also the most scalable style, extending (projecting) as far as 17 feet without external supports.

· Dome – an awning with curved ribs, which forms a rounded shape when fully extended; these tend to have a significantly shorter extension (projection) than lateral arm awnings, extending only about five feet out maximum from the mount point. An elongated dome can have a longer projection than a standard dome style, almost double. Dome awnings are common for commercial properties and for window and door awnings.

· Drop screen – a kind of retractable awning which is mounted vertically so it extends downward. This style of awning has the mounting bar and fabric, but no arms since it simply “drops” down. This is mainly used to screen patios, gazebos, and other outdoor areas from glare, heat, rain, UV rays, direct sun, mosquitoes, and pollen.

There are also dozens of different accessories for retractable awnings which make them easier to operate. A couple of common ones:

· Anemometer – a device which monitors wind speed; this is used with wind sensors.

· Sensors – devices which monitor different atmospheric conditions and trigger the motor to retract or extend the awning accordingly; there are four major kinds of sensors, including sun (light) sensors, wind sensors, rain sensors, and motion sensors (which monitor movements, such as wind gusts)

· Motor – a device which automatically moves the awning; motors are enclosed in the roller tube.

Terms: Materials

The retractable awning materials are the true indicator of quality – because the kind of materials used translates into quality, not the expense of the materials. For the fabric, there are two major categories of fabrics:

· Canvas – a natural fiber (cotton) woven fabric; canvas awnings are prone to fade, mildew, and rot.

· Solution-dyed acrylic – a man-made fiber which is woven into a lightweight, breathable fabric; because it is a chemical polymer, the fabric cannot rot. Solution-dyed means that the pigments are included in the fiber solution, which makes the fabric highly fade resistant.

For the frame, the important materials are the body and joints:

· Electrostatically powder-coated aluminum – a metal frame which is lightweight, durable, and rust-resistant; powder-coating is a method of applying pigment to aluminum frames which is extremely difficult to flake off or damage, unlike enamel or paint.

· PVC – a hard polymer also used to make plumbing pipes; this tends to be brittle.

· Kevlar® – the polymer used to make bulletproof vests; Kevlar® straps in the arms instead of cables are extremely strong and durable and can’t rust.

· Cables – braided metal strands which are used in the arms; these are usually steel, which rusts, leading the cables to discolor the fabric and eventually break. Cables cannot be replaced because they are internal to the arm and inaccessible.

Terms: Installation

Understanding a few terms about the positioning and installation of the awning can help determine the appropriate size and installation location for your awning:

· Mount – what way or location the awning is affixed to the home or building, such as a wall mount, eave mount, soffit, or roof mount.

· Pitch – the angle that the awning comes down from the mount point to the front bar. Some lateral arm retractable awnings have an adjustable pitch.

· Projection – how far out from the wall the awning can extend.

· Load – the stress put on the awning, from wind, snow, even the weight of the awning itself (dead load). Good quality retractable awnings can sustain wind speeds up to approximately 35mph

· Pooling – water buildup on the canopy which can cause the fabric to sag and stretch.
