Caravan camping can make for a fantastic getaway almost anywhere, but I think it is best in the west. In many places, you can simply just drive straight into the desert, and stay free for as long as 2 weeks. It’s true of most BLM (Bureau Of Land Management) and national forest lands, and most state forest lands too. You have to move every 2 weeks, but how far is open to interpretation, and mostly yours will be accepted.

Caravan camping, or “boondocking” is increasing in popularity. In fact, the BLM has started to create special areas for lengthier stays, especially in Arizona. A permit fee is around $140 now, but this lets you stay up to 6 months, and you get pump stations, dumpsters and water. People are residing in some of these locations. It’s less expensive than having to pay property taxes or rent for a lot to park on.

Caravan camping is popular in Winter in Arizona. One of the biggest gatherings of “boondockers” is in Quartzite. Several hundred thousand people spend at least part of the year in their RVs here. It’s close to the California border, on Interstate 10, only 20 miles from the Colorado River. Surrounded by BLM lands, Quartzite is well-known for gem shows, swap meets, and the multiplying of its population each winter.

Should you ask around when you are in the desert southwest, you will find there are Caravan communities that form every winter. Some of these temporary towns like “Slab City” in California, have bookstores, food markets vendors, and various otherbusinesses run by caravaners. When summer returns, these boondock communities vanish, and reappear again the following winter.

Just look around, and you’ll find “hidden” sites where you can park your RV for a week or a month in the desert southwest. Some are cheap, other’s free. The Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area, for example, north of Bowie, Arizona, costs $3 per night, and has great hotsprings and lots of wildlife. An annual permit costs $30, but you’re restricted to 2 weeks per month (permits are sold at the BLM office in Safford). You can stay outside the fenced area free, but then you don’t get the hotsprings and shaded picnic tables.

For information on other areas, contact the Bureau of Land Management. They can tell you what’s available under their jurisdiction. Also, the Woodall’s campground guide lists campgrounds that are free. Keep your eyes open for other RVs parked out in the desert or forest. Finally, ask around. Other caravan camping enthusiats will give you the best information on Caravan camping.

The Ford Torino was launched in 1968 as part of the Ford Fairlane family. Fairlane sales were falling and Ford decided that putting a new name on the same quality car would help sales. This decision proved to be correct with great sales for the Ford Torino and ultimately it would replace the Ford Fairlane with an updated brand of beauty, power and styling.

The production of the Ford Torino would run from 1968 through to 1976. The initial Torino was a larger vehicle than the Ford Fairlane in the previous year. The roofline for the fastback was a whole new concept for the Fairlane stable as well as the new two door hardtop.

Right from the start the Torino was built with plenty of power and comfort in mind. The V8 engines came as standard starting with the small block 302 up to the big block 390 and 428 Cobra Jet launched in 1969. Initially the 1968 Torino was available in the two door fastback, two or four door hardtop, station wagon and two door convertible.

The Torino GT was the upgraded Torino in 1968 with standard body decal stripe, styled steel wheels, wide oval sports tires and standard equipment v-8 engine. These were available with manual four speed gearbox.

The body styling saw a complete change for 1970 and 1971with a lower, wider and longer body. The Ford Torino in 1970 also saw the introduction of the 351 engines in the Torino as well as the 429 with 360 BHP.

The Ford Torino GT was also now available with a Hurst four speed manual gearbox, rear window sports slats, ribbon style tachometer, three spoke steering wheel, high back bucket seats and 15 inch magnum 500 chrome wheels. In addition the Ford Torino GT also now had the option of hideaway headlights and the side stripes were redesigned in multiple colors but only as an option.

Again in 1972 the Ford Torino was restyled with the front fenders with a more rounded profile. The rear bumper was much bigger and now housed the rear taillight units. The front grille was also redesigned and resembled the Cobra. The two door fastback now had a lower roofline whilst the roofline of the four door hardtop was now much rounder.

In 1975 the Ford Torino saw changes to the standard equipment package. The changes included power steering fitted as standard.

The 1976 model year saw no major changes to the Torino line-up in fact the biggest change was the discontinuation of the Gran Torino Sport. The optional extras included a power trunk release, automatic parking brake release and opera windows and landau roofs were now available as optional extras for all 2-door models.

The Ford Torino is perhaps best known for its appearance on the popular TV series Starsky & Hutch and more recently the Clint Eastwood film Gran Torino.

Author Andrew Whitehead – a self confessed petrol head has owned numerous classic cars from fully restored to basket cases! He now has a website to fuel his passion in all things auto and if you’re looking to buy a Ford Torino please visit http://www.americanautobid.com/blog/

Spring fever hits hard to those of us in colder northern climates. We’ve had enough of the snow and sleet and look forward to seeing and hearing the robins in the backyard returning to their summer homes and signaling that a re-birth is about to happen. Lawns will begin to turn green, trees will be budding, and RVers will begin our favorite rite of spring — dewinterizing our rig! Knowing that temperatures are not going to go below freezing for the next six months or so is a definite cause for celebration!

We’ve put together some information to help those of you who may be new to the RV world to join us in this rite of passage!

Dewinterizing the water system is a simple process.

  1. Start by filling your fresh water tank with 8-10 gallons of water.
  2. Turn on your water pump and open a cold water tap. You will probably have some spitting and sputtering as the “pink stuff” comes out (if you winterized using RV antifreeze) and is replaced by the fresh water (this is normal).
  3. Allow the water to run for several minutes.
  4. Connect your hose to the city water inlet and turn it on.
  5. One at a time, turn on all of the cold water faucets and allow water to run for several minutes. Don’t forget about any outside shower you may have!
  6. Fill the toilet with water and flush, several times.
  7. Open the water heater bypass and allow the heater to fill with fresh water. You may wish to remove the plug and allow some water to run through the heater prior to filling. (Make sure you put the plug back in!)
  8. Once the hot water heater has filled, run water through all the hot water faucets.

If you wish to sterilize your fresh water tank, simply follow these instructions:

  1. Mix one cup of household bleach in a gallon of water.
  2. Pour the bleach/water mixture into your fresh water tank.
  3. Using your white water hose, fill the fresh water tank completely.
  4. Turn on your water pump and run each faucet until you can smell the bleach.
  5. Refill the fresh water tank again and let the system sit for at least a few hours.
  6. Drain the fresh water tank and refill with clean water.
  7. Flush your system out by running the clean water through each faucet again, until the chlorine smell is gone.

If you prefer not to use bleach to clean and sanitize your fresh water system, there are products available to sanitize and sterilize your fresh water tank. The RVing Outpost carries Thetford’s Fresh Water Tank Sanitizer which is a two step system that works well to clean and sanitize fresh water systems not only in RVs, but also in mobile homes, boats, drinking water hoses and water coolers.

Julie Miklaszewicz is an avid RVer, having visited 48 states by the time she was 16 years old. She has yet to fly anywhere and prefers traveling in her truck and fifth wheel camper with her husband and three children, enjoying the beauty of the U.S.A. from the ground. While camping and at home, she prefers to cook in her cast iron Dutch ovens and numerous other cast iron cookware. She and her husband, Greg, are the owners of the RVing Outpost, located in Abbotsford, WI.

What would be the best to buy a fifth wheel camper or a moterhome?

I have the truck already to pull a horse trailer .

There isn’t a good answer to this.

Since you already have a truck, I’d say the 5th wheel just for the sake of saving money. A motorhome is more convenient though.
