Visiting Northwest Territories' Campgrounds, Yukon Territories' On Your Next Road Trip

Few places on earth are as forbidding as the northern reaches of Canada. Consisting of the Northwest and Yukon Territories, this area makes up more than 40 percent of Canada's land mass and stretches from the edge of the northern Canadian Rockies to the frigid waters of the Arctic Circle. But hey, that doesn't mean you shouldn't stop off for a quick peek, does it? Much like other extreme parts of the continent, the intrepid traveler willing to press on into these northern lands is rewarded with plenty of great views, wildlife and geography like few other places around the globe. And just think of the tall tales you'll spin around the campfire. These lands, which once hosted an enormous yet fleeting gold rush population, are some of the most treasured and untouched wilderness in North America.

A great way to introduce yourself to these northern territories is to take the Alaska Highway from British Columbia. Finished in 1942, the highway passes through several provincial parks in British Columbia before heading west into the Yukon. What this means to visitors is a chance to visit Kluane National Park, a huge expanse of pristine wilderness that borders British Columbia and the southern reaches of Alaska, located in the southwest corner of the Yukon. The park features the impressive St. Elias Mountains, crowned by the enormous Mt. Logan, towering nearly 18,000 feet. From these mountains, the parks roll west and into a small strip of Alaska, before ending at the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

The Klondike Highway, which heads north out of the Yukon town of Whitehorse, is another scenic drive dotted with natural wonders and great campgrounds. Along this route you'll come across lovely Lake Laberge, famous for its abundance of lake trout and other fish. From there, the highway passes through several charming towns that sprang up throughout the region like wildfire during the gold rush era of the late 1800s.

At the town of Dawson, the Klondike Highway turns into the Dempster Highway and eventually leads to the town of Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. This coastal tundra region forms the southern edge of the Arctic and is home to two national parks created to protect the region's fragile and virtually untouched ecosystem. Both the Ivvavik and Vuntut National Parks sit along the shores of frigid Mackenzie Bay, and the mighty Mackenzie River nearby. The waterway stretches for more than 1,000 miles before dumping into the chilly waters of the Beaufort Sea. The lengthy riverfront offers excellent hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities along the Canol Heritage Trail near the town of Norman Wells. Of course, you don't have to walk the entire 230-mile trail, but do pick a section and spend some time off-road. Here, the stealthy hiker (who keeps the proper distance!) will surely be able to spot some of the continent's most elusive creatures, including wolves and grizzly bears.

To the east of these two adjoining parks is the Tuktut Nogait National Park, where it is almost expected for one to spot agile Dall's sheep, grizzly bears, or herds of caribou which roam the Arctic base. The area also hosts an impressive geological collection of pingos, a natural formation unique to this region, where gravel and soil form cone-like structures and reach as high as 140 feet.

Canada's northern reaches are home to the Nahanni National Park. It's surrounded by dense forests and rugged mountains, not to mention Virginia Falls, an impressive pair of waterfalls whose enormity and awe-inspiring presence is eclipsed only by Niagara Falls. The park is also home to the Rabbitkettle Hot Springs, a natural wonder that can reach 70 degrees during the summer; a moderate temperature elsewhere, but steamy for this region of the globe. The hot springs offer a refreshing respite from hiking the miles of trails at Nahanni National Park.

How Used Caravans for Sale and Caravan Repairs Can Beat the Blues

Remember when the great British holiday was really great? When it meant piling into the car and towing a caravan to the seaside; setting up in a farmer's field; taking dinner out under the awning while the kids charged around in fresh air? Sounds good, doesn't it. And it's coming back in style. The caravan is fast becoming the number one way for British people to spend their summer holidays – cheap to pitch, great fun to be in and the only way to get guaranteed good lodgings at popular tourist destinations. A new caravan isn't cheap, mind – which is why used caravans for sale, and good caravan repairs, are experiencing a boom they've probably never known before.

Used caravans for sale offer a great way for anyone to get into the freedom that is caravanning. All a person needs is a bit of good advice on the right van for their intended purpose, and they're off: away to enjoy the hills and the sea without a care in the world. A word of warning, though – make sure the van is really good, otherwise the first spot of rain to hit will spell disaster for that dream of freedom.

The best way to ensure one is viewing good used caravans for sale is to go to a reputable dealer rather than a private individual. Buying a second hand caravan should be treated with the same caution as buying a second hand car. Buy from a trade business, get a receipt and the long arm of the law will help if everything goes wrong. Buy from a private person and beware the consequences. Not even the best caravan repairs in the world can help a second hand van that has had a long-disregarded broken seam.

Caravans, though brilliant fun, are fragile beasts. They're designed to offer a warm, dry and incredibly efficient space to spend an outdoor holiday in: but they're extremely susceptible to damp, which can kill them in a night. Once one has looked around some used caravans for sale, taken the plunge and started living that relaxed, out on the fields-type life they can bring, it's essential to keep a close eye on the condition of the vehicle. At the first sign of damp ingress, or cracked window seals, it's time to look for a caravan repairs shop and get the thing sorted.

Caravan repairs are actually pretty easy for a qualified person to do, provided they are caught early. The one unbreakable rule of caravan ownership is "get it fixed" – as soon as something goes wrong, make it right. Stopping a seam leak as soon as it's spotted will cost very little (another point scored for the old-fashioned British holiday) and be done in no time. Waiting until there's a soggy bubble on the ceiling before deciding to venture into a caravan repairs shop can cost more than just an arm and a leg – it could cost the whole van.

Don't be put off, though – caravans, for the most part, are great, simple fun: the ideal way to spend a British break. Just remember – buy used caravans for sale through a recognised dealer, and don't hesitate to visit a caravan repairs shop if it looks like something needs a little fix.

Ten Top Tips For Your Caravan Holiday

Before you leave

1.Save for space - Collect all free sample sachets of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. These take up far less space than large bottles and are perfect to take on holiday, leaving you more room for other essentials.

2.Never forget – Make a laminated checklist of everything that you need to take with you. This allows you to mark off items with a whiteboard pen when you have packed them into your caravan. You can then rub off the pen when the list is complete and use the checklist again next year.

3.Pack safely – When loading up your caravan make sure you put all heavy items directly over the axle. Placing heavy items at the back of the caravan could cause your van to pitch back and forth. Also, be sure not to put any heavy items into cupboards – store them on the floor to maintain control of your caravan.

4.No flies on you – If you are sick of spending hours picking the squashed flies from your caravan's front window, then give this tip a go. Before you set off, cover your front window with cling film (attached with masking tape.) Then, when you arrive on site, simply peel off the cling film along with all the creepy crawlies you have picked up on the journey.

5.Give it some welly – Wellington boots are vital on any wet weather holiday. A good tip for keeping them dry and ready to use is to store them on two sticks stuck into the ground by the door to your van or awning. Cricket stumps work well for this, search through your children's junk in the shed to track some down.

6.Stamp out stubbing – To prevent people from stubbing their toes on exposed metal stakes, such as the ones used for awnings, purchase some cheap brightly coloured armbands. When inflated they fit snugly over the protruding stakes and provide a brightly coloured warning of danger and also a cushioned impact for anyone who still manages to trip over them.

7.Slip and slide – Ever sat down to your morning cereal and ended up with half of it in your lap because you're pitched on a slope? A cheap and easy way to solve this problem is to buy a roll of non-slip matting (you can find it in most caravan shops for just a few pounds) and cut it into small squares to put under plates, glasses and cups. Problem solved!

Leaving the site & your journey home

8.Stuck in the mud – If you are staying in a particularly muddy site and your caravan has sunk into the ground, try hitching up your car at a 45-degree angle to the van. This means that when you pull off the car will not be pulling the full weight of the van from the start – it will just be turning slightly so the car has more chance of getting a good initial grip.

9.Get hooked – If you ever need to reverse your car to couple on your own, try this clever tip. Before you start, place a pole, such as one from a windbreak, vertically against the tow hook and then put a piece of tape on your back window to indicate the central position of the tow ball. Now all you need do is look in your rear-view mirror while reversing and line up the pole and the tape.

10.Drive safe – An important tip for any journey - if you are carrying a heavy load in your caravan you should be aware that the time it takes to accelerate and stop will change and need to be adapted to. Watch your speed carefully and leave ample room between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.

Did you get a price before he started? Did you get any bids for comparison? Those are the important questions. The time to settle on a price is before the work starts, not after it is completed. Doesn't help you now, but next time . . .

There simply is not enough information here to tell if the price is reasonable or not. Yes, you will see advertisements for window installation that are much less than this on a per window basis. Those will generally cover a basic installation, you will almost always have charges for additional items that are not included in the base price.

Some of the things that may increase your cost:

Applying metal on the outside. The cost of this material was probably not included in the window price. Probably some wood under it that was supplied by the contractor as well. I hope he used some caulk and some kind of flashing.

Trim on the inside. Maybe he had part of it. He had to pay for it at some point.

What happened to the old windows? If he disposed of them for you, there may have been some cost involved there.

The other thing to keep in mind when working with a contractor is the cost of tools. The metal break (used to bend the metal for the outside) alone is rather expensive. Obviously you don't have to buy the whole thing, but the contractor does have to recover this cost over some period of time.

What if one of the windows was damaged during installation? Were you going to pay for it, or would you expect the contractor to cover it? Most people would expect the contractor to cover it. The contractor should cover it, but there is a cost here I like to call the CYA factor.

What about insurance. Your contractor should have Worker's Compensation (yes you are supposed to have it even for a 1 man shop) and general liability at a minimum. Add this to the list of things to check for, and again it does cost money.

Now, with all of this in mind and considering what you paid for the windows, I would say this is probably a bit high, but if it is a good installation it is not outrageous. Labor costs are very different in different areas, so it might actually be a good deal depending upon where you are.

Relax for now, but learn a lesson for the next time. Ask for prices (as in more than one) first, make sure you know what is included and who is paying for what and ask for proof of insurance before you start your next project.
