RV Awning Brackets

Ever wake up at 3am in a cold sweat wondering if your RV holding tanks are clean? Probably not but installing a holding tank rinser will ensure this never happens to you. This RV modification will give you peace of mind so that the next time you use your toilet or sink after a long storage period, no stinky odors will gag you out of your RV.

Step 1: Find a suitable location

Installation of the Tornado tank rinser is straightforward but there are a few things to consider. The instructions say to mount the Tornado on the end of the tank opposite the tank outlet about 3/4 up from the bottom of the tank. This may not be possible depending on how your tank is mounted. If this is the case, an alternate location would be on the side of the tank as close to the end of the tank as possible. Also be sure that you have emptied the tank completely before proceeding. otherwise, you’ll have a nice stinky mess on your hands.

Step 2: Drill the hole

Once you locate the position to install the Tornado, clean around the area so that after you drill the mounting hole, the sealant used between the tank and the Tornado will adhere properly. Mark the center of the mounting location with the template provided and with a 1 1/8″ hole saw, carefully drill through the tank taking care to not drop the plastic removed in to the tank. If you do, you may, after installing the Tornado, have to fill the tank completely and flush the tank of the plastic.

Step 3: Install rinser and seal

Next, apply a bead of silicone sealant around the hole and insert the Tornado in to the hole. Secure the Tornado to the tank using the self-tapping screws provided. Wipe off the excess sealant (if any) for a clean look. Now you get to take a break for about 24 hours so the silicone sealant can cure. This is very important since you don’t want the flange to move at all while drying. Leakage can occur if you try to complete the installation before the sealant has dried.

Step 4: Route water supply hose

Now that it’s the next day, you can finish up by connecting the provided hose to the rinser using the provided fitting and hose clamp. Don’t over-tighten the clamp as this could cause tearing of the clear hose and possible leakage. Route the plastic hose to a convenient location near the dump valves. Use tie-wraps to secure the hose so it doesn’t hang down. Using the L-bracket provided, secure the water inlet to the frame or flooring. An alternative way to secure the L-bracket is to use a 4″ hose clamp and mount the bracket to the dump valve tube. Installation is now complete.

Step 5: Operating the rinser

To operate, simply attach an ordinary garden hose to the the water inlet and turn on the water. You will hear a whirring noise from the tank. This is normal as the Tornado spins under water pressure so that it sprays everywhere inside of the tank. Be sure to check for leaks while the system is in use. At the dump station, allow the the tank to empty for a few seconds before turning on the water supply to the Tornado. This will help the sprayer to get some of the gunk off the top of the tank. Let the rinser run for a minute or so after the tank is empty to ensure complete cleaning. Happy dumping!

Tip: Dual tank rinsers

You can also fit your gray water tank with a Tornado rinser. Perform the same steps as above and when it comes time to attach the water supply hose to the water inlet, use a “Y” fitting with shutoff valves instead so you can rinse either tank independently, or both at the same time.

RV Awning Arms

The Vanagon Weekender models that were introduced in 1983 are rear-engine, rear-drive vans. The 1983-1991 models feature a 4 speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission with an electronic ignition, dynamic oil pressure system and a thermostatically controlled 2-speed electric radiator fan. Most of these Vanagon weekenders have power windows, rear-blowing air conditioning, electronic locks, cruise control, cassette stereo, rear wiper/washer and power mirrors. Seating 7, the Vanagon full camper has a forward-facing center bench that converts into a 3-person bed and 2 rear facing seats that may be removed to increase cargo space. It also has a pop up roof with 2-person bed, window curtains, an optional second deep-cycle marine battery, and much more. Choose from a 3-speed automatic or a manual transmission style. Most stick shifts came in 4-speed versions and VW added a 5-speed option in 1986. As most of the Vanagons are rear wheel drive choose a 4 wheel mode which was made from 1986 to 1991.

Volkswagen vanagon has 4 speed manual transmission, rear wheel drive, electronic ignition, oil pressure system, electronic fuel injection, rear-wheel drive, power steering and brakes, Fuel tank capacity, Chrome hub caps and LP gas and carbon monoxide detectors. Some of the safety features include three point belts for front seats; side impact beams in front doors and sliding side door, height adjustable head restraints for each passenger. Storage tanks have 15.9 gallon gasoline tanks.

Some of the camping facilities which full campers have are stainless steel sink, LP gas refrigerator, front seats, 110-volt access when plugged into campground power, room darkening, pleated curtains for side windows etc. The sleeping room has canvas side-walls with screened windows, pop-up roof raises to create up to 7′ of floor to ceiling room etc. Storage area with full campers is silverware drawer, 15 cu.ft of enclosed cabinet space etc. Vanagon camper floor plan include large storage space, air conditioner and additional storage, rear mattress, top loading storage chests, sink, stove, 3-way refrigerator, adjustable rear and front dinette table with swing arm and storage closet with hanger and mirror.

By free camping, as well as staying in campsites you can reduce your daily accommodation costs. Free camping is tolerated, and even encouraged, in some areas. If you find a beautiful and safe location free camping can be the best part of a trip. By stocking up at supermarkets, when you pass them, you can save a lot of money.

Awnings are not generally included in the price of the base unit but if a second hand model is being bought then you can bet your life it will include one. If you are only going for a weekend break it is not always practicable to spend the time on setting up the awning. However, on longer holidays it can make a huge difference, especially in poorer weather.

When travelling with a trailer tent on the road, it is vital that you carry a spare wheel or tyre for the trailer unit either in the car or under the trailer. Trailer tent wheels are very different to car wheels and are not interchangeable. If you get a tyre problem you need to have your own replacement available as breakdown services will not carry spares and they may not be available in the local vicinity.

Jockey wheels are a good bit of kit for use when storing the trailer or hitching up. They increase maneuverability of the trailer unit and make it less backbreaking to hook up to the car, enabling the towing hitch to line up with the car at the same level.

Caravan camping can make for a fantastic getaway almost anywhere, but I think it is best in the west. In many places, you can simply just drive straight into the desert, and stay free for as long as 2 weeks. It’s true of most BLM (Bureau Of Land Management) and national forest lands, and most state forest lands too. You have to move every 2 weeks, but how far is open to interpretation, and mostly yours will be accepted.

Caravan camping, or “boondocking” is increasing in popularity. In fact, the BLM has started to create special areas for lengthier stays, especially in Arizona. A permit fee is around $140 now, but this lets you stay up to 6 months, and you get pump stations, dumpsters and water. People are residing in some of these locations. It’s less expensive than having to pay property taxes or rent for a lot to park on.

Caravan camping is popular in Winter in Arizona. One of the biggest gatherings of “boondockers” is in Quartzite. Several hundred thousand people spend at least part of the year in their RVs here. It’s close to the California border, on Interstate 10, only 20 miles from the Colorado River. Surrounded by BLM lands, Quartzite is well-known for gem shows, swap meets, and the multiplying of its population each winter.

Should you ask around when you are in the desert southwest, you will find there are Caravan communities that form every winter. Some of these temporary towns like “Slab City” in California, have bookstores, food markets vendors, and various otherbusinesses run by caravaners. When summer returns, these boondock communities vanish, and reappear again the following winter.

Just look around, and you’ll find “hidden” sites where you can park your RV for a week or a month in the desert southwest. Some are cheap, other’s free. The Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area, for example, north of Bowie, Arizona, costs $3 per night, and has great hotsprings and lots of wildlife. An annual permit costs $30, but you’re restricted to 2 weeks per month (permits are sold at the BLM office in Safford). You can stay outside the fenced area free, but then you don’t get the hotsprings and shaded picnic tables.

For information on other areas, contact the Bureau of Land Management. They can tell you what’s available under their jurisdiction. Also, the Woodall’s campground guide lists campgrounds that are free. Keep your eyes open for other RVs parked out in the desert or forest. Finally, ask around. Other caravan camping enthusiats will give you the best information on Caravan camping.
