Factors to Consider

Standard tents used to be “two-party-affair” pup tents. For larger parties, taller and warmer wall tents, having floors and screening of suitable fabric to make them insect-proof, were readily available.

With the growth of organized camping, the industry that provides such equipment has steadily grown. And with more campers paying close attention to structural factors, tents should now be manageable, useful, made of sturdy materials, and uncomplicated to set-up and put away. The 3-Season Tent

The 4-Season Tent

The pricier 4-season tent may or may not have a rugged “bathtub” floor which is merely an excellent waterproof floor that comes up to about six inches on most 4-season tents’ sides. These tents are suitable for year-round camping, and for whatever weather conditions there might be. They have a minimum of four aluminum poles for support, with some brands having more than that. Such specification is great for inclement winter weather. 4-season tents can also come in sleek outlines, are usually dark-colored to soak up heat better and are also lighter.

The 3-Season vis-à-vis the 4-Season

Most campers still prefer the 3-season tent because it makes for a great family camping tent. As long as it’s used in the seasons specified, it can still provide adequate protection from the elements. However, 3-season tents cannot withstand powerful snowfall, lashing rain and rough winds. They are not suitable for such wilderness outings as an Alaskan excursion in January.

Too much insulation can be a problem during the summer months for a 4-season tent. The heftier price tag of a 4-season could also sway a buyer towards a 3-season. But for the camper who plans to commune with nature in the wilderness and in stormy winter, the 4-season would be a better choice.

·        Where is the awning being mounted? There are several places where the mounting brackets can be located: on the roof, wall, ceiling, soffit, or eave. The major factor is clearance, making sure that obstructions like doors, gutters, and shutters are away from the awning itself.

·        What features will be shaded? Awnings have a different affect whether they’re installed over windows, doors, patios, hot tubs, break areas, or parking or sidewalk areas, and each space leans toward a different style of awning. Additionally, landscaping is affected by shade, including any grass areas, gardens, and trees. Plan the shade and awning size and style around the natural feature of the space.

·        What direction does the home or office face? Properties which receive most of their light from the south or west also receive a huge amount of heat, driving up air conditioning costs. Identifying the hottest areas is a good place to begin installing awnings, since this can lower air conditioning use 25% or more.

 

History and Style

Defining the function of the awning naturally flows into recognizing the perfect style. There are three major categories of retractable awnings:

·        Lateral arm, the traditional, flat stretch of fabric across two or more folding arms

·        Dome, rounded, relatively short awnings which have a high arch stretch over several ribs for shape; extra-long versions are called elongated domes

·        Drop arm/Side arm, with a single arm on both sides of the awning which can extend horizontally (side-arm) or straight down (drop-arm) for optimum coverage and allows the awning to retract fully.

 

For many building styles, retractable awnings are a natural feature. Lateral arm awnings are commonly used over patios, while dome retractable awnings and drop/side arm awnings are common over windows and doors. Lateral arm awnings, however, were very popular for both Spanish and art deco influenced architecture, even over windows.

 

Even the color can be influenced by architecture. For example, Victorians used the effect of sunlight through awnings to create diffuse colors in rooms. In the US, many residential awnings are stripes in sedate forest green and beige, but Spanish architecture lends itself to vibrant reds and yellows, while deco tends to black and white and Victorian to pastel.

 

An Eye to Climate

Climate has a huge impact on how a retractable awning is used. Retractable awnings can be motorized, and this allows sensors to be attached to the awning which can extend and retract the awning at predetermined climate conditions:

·        What kind of weather do you have? Retractable awnings are primarily for sun protection; the weight from heavy rain or snow can damage them. Specific sensors can detect rain and retract the awning. Likewise, light sensors automatically extend the awning at a certain brightness and close it at dusk.

·        Is it windy? Retractable awnings can handle sustained winds of approximately 35mph. Wind sensors detect wind speeds and retract the awning at a preset speed; some automatically recheck every few minutes to re-extend the awning when the speeds drop. Motion sensors detect sharp, sudden movement and retract the awning; this is ideal for climates subject to wind gusts.

Energy Efficiency With Retractable Awnings, Just in Time for Spring

About 90% of homeowners want to implement some kind of environmentally friendly or energy saving changes. That’s a lot of good will (and an increasing awareness of rising energy costs). However, the biggest budget priority for outdoor spending is adding a new deck or hot tub, not investing in green technology. That also makes sense – homeowners want to find comfort in their living spaces, so their first investment is toward things that enhance that experience.

Retractable awnings provide a two-fold solution that combines energy efficiency and functional recreation. Retractable awnings reduce air conditioning energy use an average of 25%, but they also make outdoor areas cooler and offer protection from sun, UV rays, wind, and mild rains, so outdoor space is more livable and enjoyable.

A Word on Energy Efficiency

According to the Minnesota Commerce Department, sunlight increases indoor heat almost 90% and is the biggest contributor to indoor temperature changes. Most energy efficiency measures attempt to deal with the heat after it has reached the home interior.

Managing heat after it’s in the room can require a lot of money, such as installing new low-solar-gain windows, putting in programmable thermostats, or getting new equipment. It can also require uncomfortable changes, like setting the thermostat at 78 degrees or even as high as 90 degrees (using a rule of thumb that the indoor temperature shouldn’t be more than 20 degrees cooler than outdoor temperatures). Lower cost solutions like reflective blinds are also less effective because heat-creating sunlight still reaches the interior of the home before being reflected.

The Professional Awning Manufacturers Association commissioned a study to see how energy efficient sun protection systems are which stop solar rays before they reach the interior of a room. For a year, in twelve cities, PAMA surveyed the effect of awnings on energy consumption and utility bills.

Stopping solar rays before they reach the room, at the exterior of the building, reduces the heat buildup between 65% and 77%. The PAMA study reveals that reducing the heat buildup means that retractable awnings lower indoor room temperatures 8-15 degrees. If solar energy is stopped outside the room, it requires less air conditioning naturally, so it’s not necessary to raise your thermostat, and you’ll still lower your energy use.

According to the PAMA study, energy consumption on houses which used awnings went down 69% in Seattle, 33% in Boston, 26% in Phoenix, and 10% in Miami. Any climate will realize lower energy use.

Using retractable awnings is important for homes with southern or western-facing windows, which are susceptible to solar heating. Retractable awnings on southern and western windows saves 25-50% more energy even than with eastern-facing windows or equally-distributed windows. Renting A Commercial Tent FAQ

When involved into a one-time off event, either organizing or merely participating, we’re often constrained by the amount of time and resources we can spend. Does anyone know how to repair a camper floor?

i have a 2000 prowler 19n travel trailr and have located a section under the rear bed that appears to have water damage. The size of the soft spot is about 18 inches by 12 inches. it has also loosened the exterior clamp that secures the awning. is this an easy fix or a big problem?!?!

I know you can use plywood to make repairs on areas like that, though the issue is the awning attachment. You may be able to place an overlarge piece of plywood behind that area, couple it with a wood block for additional support, and then reattach the awning. Of course, you are limited by the amount of space around your water heater back there (if that is where it is in your model).
